Most of these photos were taken on Tanna, one of the islands of Vanuatu. Happiness seems to be the dominant emotion in Tana, with most people smiling for most of the time. It is a nice place to be.
One of the main reasons to visit when we did was that it was the annual John Frum day celebration at the custom villages on Tanna. John Frum is a semi mythical American soldier from 1936 who promised the local people lots of cargo. The tale seems to have been embelished over the years, but several villages still believe that John Frum will one day return with lots of cargo. It seems to work as several film crews turned up for the day with quite a bit of cargo for the villages. One crew alone brought $20,000 worth of gifts.

steveaxford > A cargo cult is alive and well and surviving nicely in Tanna, Vanuatu. They believe in "John Frum" who appeared to them in 1936 and predicted the arrival of cargo. They mixed this with their tribal beliefs and it was all reinforced by the arrival of US forces in WWII. This was the "First Coming" for them and they now await the second coming. They say that Christians have been waiting 2,000 years for the second coming and for them it is a mere 60 years.
There are two John Frum villages, but they don't talk to each other. Isaac (the first) is chief of the traditional John Frumers (where these photos were taken) and Fred is leader of the new group who have mixed in some other beliefs (that Fred is a new prophet and some Christianity). Fred's village is the biggest, but Isaacs attracts the most attention as it has the celebrations.

Many may think all this is very silly, but they received a lot of cargo from film crews on their National day (the 15th of Feb), so it does seem to work for them.
